Ram Girls Work Overtime, Beat Wilton
The last time the New Canaan Rams had beaten the Wilton Warriors in girls lacrosse, Kristin Wood was a junior for the Warriors. Ten years later, Wood is the head coach of the Rams, who finally beat the Warriors 14-13 in overtime last Friday at WHS.
New Canaan sophomore Alexandra Crerend and junior Jenny Simpson scored back-to-back goals in the second three-minute OT period to put the Rams up by two on the way to the victory.
The Rams led for much of the game, but the Warriors fought back numerous times.
After Wilton scored first, New Canaan rallied for four straight goals to take a 4-1 lead at the 16:31 mark of the first half. Wilton got back to within two at 6-4 by haftime and tied the game 6:52 into the second half on two goals by Kacie Johnson.
Simpson and Crerend scored the next two goals to make it 8-6 for the Rams, who then led 9-7 with 12 minutes to play.
Wilton still had some life left, however, and scored three consecutive goals to take its first lead in more than 38 minutes at 10-9 with 7:35 remaining.
Veronica Lizzio tied the score a couple of minutes later and Kacey Pippitt got the lead back for New Canaan with 4:43 remaining.
Brooke Flanagan tied it for Wilton with 4:27 to play, and when Johnson scored her fifth goal with just 33.5 seconds remaining, it appeared the Warriors were going to get the victory.
But Lizzio earned a free position with 10 seconds on the clock and flipped a pass to Simpson, who scored the equalizer with 7.2 seconds on the clock.
After the first three minutes of overtime were scoreless, Crerend scored off a pass from Lizzio 33 seconds into the second period. Simpson then scored on a free position with 59 seconds left for a 14-12 lead.
Flanagan made it a one-goal game with 23 seconds remaining, but Lizzio picked up a ground ball after the draw and New Canaan was able to run the clock out.
The victory gave New Canaan records of 8-3 overall and 5-3 in the FCIAC, while Wilton fell to 8-2 overall and 6-2 in the conference.
