Winning is just a little bit easier when you work as a team to rack up 13 more assists than your opponent, a fact the Apex Cougars proved on Friday. They enjoyed a cozy 58-43 victory over Pinecrest. Given Apex's advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 191st, while Pinecrest is ranked 474th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Isabella Pease continued her habit of posting crazy stat lines, scoring 19 points along with 7 rebounds and 6 steals. Another player making a difference was Analiza Whittlesey, who scored 12 points.
Pinecrest's defeat shouldn't obscure the performances of Ava Depenbrock, who scored 20 points along with 6 rebounds, and Aniyah McGregor who scored 8 points along with 7 rebounds and 5 steals. Depenbrock is on a roll when it comes to steals, as she's now stole two or more in the last three games she's played.
The win makes it two in a row for Apex and bumps their season record up to 3-1. As for Pinecrest, they still haven't won a game yet this season and fell to 0-6.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Apex will take on Green Level at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Hopefully Green Level focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 12 on Friday. Pinecrest will be staying on the road on Wednesday to face off against Clayton at 6:00 p.m. on December 13th.
