Saugus had to travel to play their first game of the season, but the final result was worth the trip. They managed a 38-34 win over the Buena Bulldogs on Friday. The victory was some much needed relief for the Centurions as it spelled an end to their ten-game losing streak dating back to last season.
A big part of the win came down to the chemistry between Jake Nuttall and his top target Landon Lattimore. Nuttall threw for 338 yards and three touchdowns while Lattimore picked up 141 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Lattimore got the majority of those yards when he pulled down a pass and and took off for a gain of82 yards.
Saugus' defense was in the mix too, especially the secondary: they snagged two passes before it was all said and done. The picks came courtesy of Gage Sheklow and Degan Grant. Sheklow also put in work on the defensive side of the ball, picking up a sack, making two total tackles, and defending a pass in addition to snagging an interception.
Buena lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being James Blanks, who rushed for 113 yards and a touchdown on only 15 carries, and also picked up 34 receiving yards and a touchdown. Another signal caller making a difference was Blake Eberhard, who rushed for 117 yards and a touchdown on only 13 carries.
Saugus will be playing in front of their home fans against Oak Park at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Saugus is out to stop a five-game streak of losses at home dating back to last season.
