Cheyenne Mountain is 9-1 against Air Academy since March of 2019 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Tuesday. The Red-Tailed Hawks will challenge the Kadets at 3:30 p.m. Both teams are still undefeated (Cheyenne Mountain has three wins , while Air Academy has four).
Cheyenne Mountain took a six-run defeat the last time they faced off against Pine Creek, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. The Red-Tailed Hawks skirted past the Eagles 9-7.
Luke Rossow looked comfortable as he tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits.
At the plate, Colton Johnson was incredible, going 1-for-2 with one home run and four RBI. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in April of 2024. Noah Reickert also deserves some recognition as he launched his first home run of the season.
Cheyenne Mountain lost a few balls and finished the game with three home runs. That's the most home runs they've managed all season.
While Air Academy didn't have the best season last year (they finished 9-14), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. They came out on top against Pueblo Central by a score of 7-3 on Friday.
Wyatt Kelley spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned (and two unearned) runs on five hits and racked up eight Ks. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in four consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Sam Steubing, who scored two runs while going 2-for-4. The team also got some help courtesy of Logan Sullivan, who scored two runs and stole a base while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances.
Air Academy pushed their record up to 8-0-1 with the victory, which was their fourth straight on the road. The road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.8 runs on average over those games. As for Cheyenne Mountain, their record now sits at 5-0-1.
Cheyenne Mountain couldn't quite get it done against Air Academy in their previous matchup back in April of 2024 as they fell 11-6. Can the Red-Tailed Hawks avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
