The Cape Fear Colts were the 65-54 winner over the Fairmont Golden Tornadoes when they last played one another back in December of 2022, but their luck changed this time around. The matchup between the pair wasn't particularly close, with Cape Fear falling 60-42. While losing is never fun, they can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 489th, while Fairmont is ranked 195th).
Cape Fear lost on Tuesday despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Mehakai Coleman, who scored eight points along with 15 rebounds. That's the first time this season that Coleman pulled down eight or more rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Connor Moore, who scored ten points.
It was another big night for Landon Cummings, who dropped a double-double on 15 points and ten rebounds for Fairmont. Those ten rebounds set a new season-high mark for Cummings. Another player making a difference was Ty'Rek Thompson, who scored ten points along with five rebounds.
This is the second loss in a row for Cape Fear and nudges their season record down to 1-3. As for Fairmont, the win was the third in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 4-1.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Cape Fear's road trip will continue as they head out to face Red Springs at 7:30 p.m. on December 8th. Red Springs is coming into the match on a three-game losing streak. As for Fairmont, they will head out on the road to face off against Northside - Jacksonville at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Hopefully Northside - Jacksonville focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 31 on Wednesday.
