The Ponderosa Mustangs will be playing in front of their home fans against the Windsor Wizards at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Ponderosa had already won four in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 29.8 points), and they went ahead and made it five two weeks ago. They blew past Bear Creek, posting a 45-0 victory on the road. Given Ponderosa's advantage in MaxPreps' Colorado football rankings (they are ranked 26th, while Bear Creek is ranked 85th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Sean Davis went supernova for Ponderosa, rushing for 154 yards and three touchdowns while picking up 8.1 yards per carry. Davis is on a roll when it comes to rushing yards, as he's now rushed for 100 or more in the last four games he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Max Mervin, who gained 138 total yards and a touchdown.
Meanwhile, with a playoff game on the line, Windsor rose to the challenge on Saturday. They breezed by Centaurus at home to the tune of 48-0. The win was familiar territory for Windsor who now have six in a row.
Samuel Cooper was a one-man wrecking crew for Windsor as he rushed for 213 yards and three touchdowns on only 12 carries. Cooper really tore up the turf during one magnificent 91-yard run. Another player making a difference was Brady Lichtenberg, who rushed for 132 yards and a touchdown while picking up 7.8 yards per carry.
Ponderosa pushed their record up to 7-3 with that victory, which was their third straight on the road. They've been dominating during the contests in that stretch too, as they've won by an average of 41 points. As for Windsor, their victory bumped their record up to 9-2.
Here's a few offensive stats to keep an eye on ahead of Friday's match: Ponderosa has been excellent on the ground this season, having averaged 188.4 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Windsor struggles in that department as they've been even better at 275.2 per game. It's looking like Friday's game might have some serious battles in the trenches. Ponderosa barely slipped by Windsor when the teams last played back in September of 2019, winning 24-23. One of the biggest obstacles trying to stand in the way of that victory was Windsor's Kenny Sleeth #17, who rushed for 187 yards on only 12 carries. Now that he won't be playing on Friday, will it be that much easier for Ponderosa to walk away with another win? Check MaxPreps.com after the match to find out.
