The Lake Weir Hurricanes struggled with assists on Friday (the Umatilla Bulldogs had 12 more) and sadly the final score reflected it. Lake Weir suffered a rough 77-54 defeat at the hands of Umatilla. The defeat unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for Lake Weir in their matchups with Umatilla: they've now lost five in a row.
When it comes to explaining why Lake Weir lost, one person who can't be blamed is Amar Young. Despite the final result, he scored 25 points along with four steals. Those 25 points set a new season-high mark for him. Another player making a difference was Antonio Jackson, who scored five points along with four steals.
Umatilla's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Jay Miller, who went 6 for 11 from beyond the arc en route to 31 points and 1 assists. Miller continues to roll, besting his previous point total in each of the last three games he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Herly Brutus, who almost dropped a triple-double on 12 points, nine rebounds, and nine assists.
Lake Weir now has a losing record at 6-7. As for Umatilla, they pushed their record up to 10-3 with that victory, which was their seventh straight at home dating back to last season.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Lake Weir and Dunnellon will face off at 7:00 p.m. on January 9th without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. Hopefully Dunnellon focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 17 on Saturday. As for Umatilla, they will look to defend their home court on Monday against First Academy at 6:00 p.m. First Academy will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Florida Rankings (they are ranked 733rd, while Umatilla is ranked 192nd).
