Winning is just a little bit easier when you work as a team to rack up nine more assists than your opponent, a fact the Sunnyside Blue Devils proved on Tuesday. They secured a 47-43 W over Rincon/University. Given Sunnyside's advantage in MaxPreps' Arizona basketball rankings (they are ranked 14th, while Rincon/University is ranked 138th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
It was another big night for Nayeli Nidez-Acu?a, who scored 17 points along with nine rebounds and two steals. She hasn't dropped below two steals for six straight games. Another player making a difference was Alana Felix, who scored seven points along with five rebounds.
Despite the defeat, Rincon/University had strong showings from Leila O'Dowd, who dropped a double-double on 15 points and 12 rebounds, and Daphne Safo, who scored 13 points along with seven rebounds and two blocks. That was a full 34.9% of Rincon/University's points, marking the ninth time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Jada Cameron, who scored four points along with three steals.
The win makes it two in a row for Sunnyside and bumps their season record up to 19-3. As for Rincon/University, they now have a losing record at 10-11.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Sunnyside will take on Marana at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. As for Rincon/University, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Tucson High Magnet School at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Tucson High Magnet School is coming into the matchup hot, having won their last six games.
