Downriver recap Sept. 26, 2012
The biggest upset of the week belonged to Melvindale, who took down 216th ranked Carlson, 42-14.
Devin Goodwell and Cortez Gardner provided fans with a highlight when they connected against Roosevelt. The longest such play in Downriver this season, the connection resulted in 72 yards.
Truman's dynamic duo of Goodwell and Gardner proved tough for the Bears to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Goodwell threw for 120 yards and one touchdown and Gardner had 120 yards receiving.
Nick Maher was the most productive running back in the league this week. In 11 carries, he ran for 194 yards as Woodhaven fell to Roosevelt. Garrett Weirich also contributed to the rushing game with 89 yards on the ground.
Ron Adams's team's Kevin Matejko and Devan Stewart have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Matejko has thrown for 624 yards this season, while Stewart, a 6-foot-1 receiver, has 12 catches for 291 yards. Maher from the Warriors leads the league in rushing with 744 yards.
The top two teams in Downriver will face off this week when first place Roosevelt takes on second place Woodhaven. The Bears defeated Truman last week, while Woodhaven bested Lincoln Park.
The Cardinals moved up to 219 from 291 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. Melvindale was able to make the jump by beating the Marauders 42-14.
