ELLIANA GONZALES was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out 13 over five innings pitched. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in 11 consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going a perfect 2-for-2 with six RBI and two doubles. That's the most doubles she has posted since back in March of 2024.
In other batting news, RACHEL HUNT was a standout: she got on base in all four of her plate appearances with four runs, one triple, and one stolen base. Those four runs gave her a new career-high. ALEIGHANA CLEMONS was another key player, going a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs, one triple, and one double.
South Bend Riley was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .474. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Michigan City only posted a batting average of .000.
Meanwhile, La Porte hadn't done well against New Prairie recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Wednesday. The Slicers narrowly escaped with a victory as the team sidled past the Cougars 2-1. The win was a breath of fresh air for the Slicers as it put an end to their three-game losing streak.
Mia Maxel spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned run on five hits and racked up 11 Ks.
At the plate, Shayla Sorg was excellent, going 1-for-3 with one home run and two RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Evie Travis, who went 2-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one double.
South Bend Riley's victory bumped their record up to 18-9. As for La Porte, their win bumped their record up to 13-16.
Thursday's contest will be a test for both teams' pitchers. South Bend Riley hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .347. However, it's not like La Porte struggles in that department as they've averaged .321. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
South Bend Riley skirted past La Porte 6-5 when the teams last played on May 10th. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Wildcats since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
