1A Tri-Peaks recap October 1, 2013
Buena Vista's Trevor Close rumbled for the longest rushing play in 1A Tri-Peaks this season in his game against Salida last week. Close's team defeated the Spartans as he sprinted for 81 yards on the play and finished with 110 in all.
Custer County was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from fifth to third in the league. The Bobcats defeated John Mall 28-27 earlier in the week.
Conner Rowley was a beast in the backfield as Custer County beat the Panthers.
Derek Brown was a key player and the best on defense this week as Buena Vista topped Salida. The 6-foot-5 junior.
Keegan Wentz put up the best numbers in passing as Matt Flavin's team bested Eric Handke's team. He finished with 7 completions for 122 yards and 2 touchdowns. Wentz's favorite target this week was Zakk James, who caught 2 passes for 46 yards.
Leading the league in both passing and receiving yards, the Demons' Wentz and James have proven to be a lethal combination. Wentz has thrown for 611 yards this season, while James, a 6-foot-1 receiver, has 14 catches for 329 yards. Rye's Sean Daniels leads the league in rushing yards with 630.
The top two teams in 1A Tri-Peaks will face off this week when first place Buena Vista takes on second place Rye. Last week, Buena Vista beat the Spartans, while the Thunderbolts fell to Ellicott.
Fans will be thrilled by an exciting game in the secondary when the Demons' James goes up against Rye's Trey Zupancic.
Next week's game between Buena Vista and Jeff Bailey's team will feature a good passing match up as Wentz will test his arm against Zupancic's defensive ability.
The league will see a high scoring game when the Thunderbolts and the Demons face off this week. The top two offenses in the league, Rye comes in having scored 119 this season, while Buena Vista has scored 193. The Thunderbolts scored 26 points last week as they fell to the Thunderhawks.
