The McCormick Chiefs came tearing into Saturday's match with six straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 36.5 points) and they left with even more momentum. They came out on top against Abbeville by a score of 66-57. Having run the score up that high, both teams probably have some extra defensive drills coming up.
McCormick's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Demontae Wideman led the charge by scoring 16 points along with three steals. Wideman hasn't dropped below two steals for 11 straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of Terrence Cartledge, who scored 16 points along with nine rebounds and two steals.
Abbeville's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Jd Baylor, who scored 15 points along with seven rebounds and four steals. Baylor is on a roll when it comes to steals, as he's now grabbed two or more in the last eight games he's played. Justin Rollinson was another key contributor, scoring 14 points along with five assists and three steals.
Even though they lost, Abbeville were working as a unit and finished the game with 15 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as McCormick only racked up seven assists.
McCormick pushed their record up to 17-2 with that win, which was their tenth straight at home dating back to last season. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 63.5 points per game. As for Abbeville, their loss dropped their record down to 9-4.
McCormick will head out on the road to face off against South Carolina School for the Deaf & Blind at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. South Carolina School for the Deaf & Blind is still on the hunt for that elusive first 'W'. As for Abbeville, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Ninety Six at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
