The Glennallen Panthers lost against the Ninilchik Wolverines back in January of 2023, and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Friday. Glennallen was beaten by Ninilchik 69-24. Glennallen was in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 35-12.
Ninilchik's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Rowan Mahoney led the charge by scoring 18 points along with seven steals and six rebounds. That makes it five consecutive games in which Mahoney has scored at least 25% of Ninilchik's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Maxx Russell, who dropped a double-double on 15 points and 13 rebounds.
This is the second loss in a row for Glennallen and nudges their season record down to 1-2. As for Ninilchik, the win was the third in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 4-1.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Glennallen won't have much time to rest: their next matchup is against Cook Inlet Academy at 10:30 a.m. on January 6th. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in Alaska (Cook Inlet Academy is ranked 21st, while Glennallen is ranked 40th). Ninilchik will have some time to savor their win since their next game is a little ways off: they'll take on Susitna Valley at 6:30 p.m. on January 16th.
