Trenton and Santa Fe are an even 4-4 against one another since February of 2016, but likely not for long. Trenton will take on Santa Fe at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Trenton is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.7 runs per game this season.
Trenton took a loss when they played away from home on Thursday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Monday. They put the hurt on Chiefland with a sharp 9-1 victory. The result was nothing new for the Tigers, who have now won seven games by six runs or more so far this season.
Mason VunCannon and Noah Owens made a big impact no matter where they played. Throwing, VunCannon struck out eight batters over five innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits (and only one walk). Meanwhile, Owens pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. What's more, VunCannon gave up only one walk, the fewest he's had since back in February. At the plate, VunCannon scored three runs and stole two bases while going 3-for-4, while Owens went 2-for-4 with two RBI and one double. That's the most hits Owens has posted since back in March of 2024.
In other batting news, Pierson Weatherilt was excellent, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 2-for-3. That's the most hits he has posted since back in February. Brock Petrello also deserves some recognition as he hit his first double of the season.
Meanwhile, Santa Fe made easy work of Gainesville on Wednesday and carried off a 19-6 win. That 13 run margin sets a new team best for the Raiders this season.
Santa Fe got a massive performance out of Dylan Doria, who scored three runs and stole three bases while going 2-for-3. Doria is becoming a predictor of Santa Fe's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 4-8 when he doesn't). Another player making a difference was Jackson McDavid, who got on base in all four of his plate appearances with four RBI, two runs, and one triple.
Trenton's victory was their 11th straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 12-3. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.9 runs on average over those games. As for Santa Fe, they now have a winning record of 9-8.
Everything went Trenton's way against Santa Fe in their previous meeting two weeks ago, as Trenton made off with an 11-5 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for Trenton since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
