The Wake Christian Academy Bulldogs will square off against the Durham Academy Cavaliers at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. Wake Christian Academy is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.4 runs per game this season.
Wake Christian Academy saw some tournament action on Monday. They took a 7-4 hit to the loss column at the hands of East Bladen. The Bulldogs have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Wake Christian Academy got a good showing from Nathan Winstead, who pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. That's the first time Winstead hasn't allowed a single hit since back in March.
On the hitting side, Trace Turner made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went 3-for-4 with one home run and three RBI. That home run was his first of the season. Another player making a difference was Carter Collins, who went 2-for-4 with one stolen base and one double.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Durham Academy). They put the hurt on Kerr-Vance Academy with a sharp 20-4 victory on Friday. The high-flying hitting performance was a huge turnaround for the Cavaliers considering their one-run performance the contest before.
Zach Plavnik made a splash no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching four innings while giving up just two earned runs off five hits. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in strikeouts (four). He was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two RBI, one run, and one double.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Benjamin Kuo, who got on base in four of his five plate appearances with four runs, two stolen bases, and three RBI. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in March. Amare Burrus was another key player, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with two stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI.
Durham Academy was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .423. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Kerr-Vance Academy only posted a batting average of .280.
Durham Academy's win bumped their record up to 5-12. As for Wake Christian Academy, their defeat dropped their record down to 14-6.
Durham Academy's hitters will have their work cut out for them on Monday. Wake Christian Academy has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.7 strikeouts per game. It's a different story for Durham Academy, though, as they've been averaging only 3.4 strikeouts. Will Wake Christian Academy keep running through batters, or will the Cavaliers buck the trend?
