The Monacan Chiefs proved they can win big last Thursday (they won by 41) but on Tuesday they proved they can win the close ones too. They narrowly escaped with a win as the squad sidled past L.C. Bird 52-49. The victory made it back-to-back wins for Monacan.
Monacan's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Lila Donnelly led the charge by scoring 25 points along with six rebounds and two steals. Donnelly continues to roll, besting her previous point total in each of the last four games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Amirah Washington, who scored 17 points along with five rebounds and two steals.
L.C. Bird lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Kylie Kent, who scored 12 points along with six rebounds. Kamari Simon was another key contributor, scoring nine points along with five rebounds and five steals.
Monacan has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won nine of their last ten matches, which provided a nice bump to their 14-4 record this season. As for L.C. Bird, their defeat dropped their record down to 13-5.
Monacan will be playing at home against the Titans at 7:15 p.m. on Thursday. Cosby will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Virginia Rankings (they are ranked 86th, while the Chiefs are ranked 34th). As for L.C. Bird, they and the Bulldogs will face off at 6:00 p.m. on February 1st without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. Richmond City School of the Arts comes in on a streak of failing to score more than 24 points in their last 15 games, a trend the team is of course eager to reverse.
