South is 0-10 against Briggs since April of 2019 but things could change on Wednesday. The Bulldogs will square off against the Bruins at 5:30 p.m. South has given up an average of 14 runs per game this season, but Wednesday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.
South is headed into Wednesday's match looking for a big change in momentum after dropping their seventh straight game on Monday. They took a 16-13 hit to the loss column at the hands of Marion-Franklin.
Kellin Campbell and Ovanti Dennis did some serious damage despite the final result: Campbell went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, three RBI, and two runs, while Dennis went 3-for-4 with four stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI. Campbell also put up two doubles, which were his first of the season. Justin Davis, Jr. was another key player, getting on base in three of his five plate appearances with one stolen base and one run.
Meanwhile, Briggs entered their tilt with Walnut Ridge on Monday with nine consecutive wins, and they'll enter their next game with ten. They were the clear victors by an 8-1 margin over the Scots. The Bruins might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won 11 contests by seven runs or more this season.
Wyatt Martin was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He struck out nine batters over 3.2 innings while giving up just one earned run but no hits (and only one walk). Those nine strikeouts gave him a new career-high. He was also big at the plate, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run. He has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last four times he's played.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Cameron Griffith, who went 2-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and one double.
Briggs pushed their record up to 12-2 with the victory, which was their sixth straight on the road. The road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.8 runs on average over those games. As for South, their defeat dropped their record down to 2-9.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Wednesday as neither team is afraid to steal. South has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 7.4 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Briggs struggles in that department as they've been averaging 10.4 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
South might still be hurting after the 20-13 loss they got from Briggs in their previous meeting two weeks ago. Can the Bulldogs avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
