Video: San Diego State Commit is too smoothWatch Casey Schmitt of San Diego Section champion Eastlake in action.
The Archbishop McCarthy Mavericks began the 2017 season ranked No. 1 in the nation. After winning their seventh state championship in eight years, they will have to settle for No. 2.
The Mavericks defeated Jesuit (Tampa) 5-1 in the championship game to finish the season 29-2. Archbishop McCarthy, which was ranked No. 2 last week, thus finishes the season at No. 2 behind undefeated Shawnee (Okla.).
It's unlikely that any team will pass the Mavericks as the No.3 and 4 teams have completed their seasons and No. 5 Moody (Corpus Christi) has as many losses and three ties on its record and still has at least two more games to play in the Texas Class 5A state tournament.
Seven new teams joined the rankings this week, led by El Toro (Lake Forest, Calif.), which won the California Southern Section Division 1 championship over Corona (Calif.) and entered the rankings at No. 25.
