Each year since 2006, MaxPreps has recognized outstanding performers in high school football. America's source for high school sports continues the tradition to close out the 2021 season by naming the top player in each state. Selections are based on team success and individual excellence, in addition to local and state accolades.
Trey Heinrich of
Kindred is the 2021 MaxPreps North Dakota High School Football Player of the Year. The 6-foot, 170-pound junior running back/linebacker was an impact player on both sides of the ball for the Vikings, helping lead the program to its first state title.
Heinrich led Kindred to a 12-1 record, rushing for 1,347 yards and 22 touchdowns. He was also one of quarterback Max McQuillan's favorite targets, catching 19 passes for 360 yards and six touchdowns. On defense he finished the year with 72 tackles, one sack, one forced fumble and seven interceptions. He also scored two defensive touchdowns.
In Kindred's 37-14 win over Hillsboro-Central Valley in the Class B 11-man title game, Heinrich ran for 132 yards and two touchdowns, including a 53-yard sprint in the second quarter. He accounted for four touchdowns in the semifinal game, two on the ground and two through the air.
Kansas State freshman offensive lineman Andrew Leingang was the 2020 MaxPreps North Dakota Player of the Year after helping lead Century to back-to-back unbeaten state championship seasons.
Each state's MaxPreps Player of the Year will be considered for inclusion in the MaxPreps All-America Team, which will be released in early January.
