Baseball Recap: Thornwood Makes It Four in a Row on the Road

Thornwood proved they can win big on Monday (they won by 12) and on Wednesday they proved they can win the close ones too. They skirted past the Argo Argonauts 7-5. This was payback for the Thunderbirds, who suffered an 11-2 loss the last time these two teams met.

Kordae Montgomery made a splash while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching 5.1 innings while giving up three earned (and two unearned) runs off six hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than one walk in five consecutive appearances. He was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances with two stolen bases, one run, and one double.

In other batting news, Thornwood let Derrion Howard and Emmanuel Pozo run wild. Howard went 2-for-4 with four stolen bases and two runs, while Pozo got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two stolen bases, two RBI, and one run. Pozo is becoming a predictor of Thornwood's success: when he posts at least two stolen bases the team is 7-2 (and 2-3 when he doesn't). Another player making a difference was Amira Hondras, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with one stolen base and one run.

Thornwood pushed their record up to 9-5 with the victory, which was their fourth straight on the road. The road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.0 runs over those games. As for Argo, they moved to 6-11 with that defeat, which also ended their three-game winning streak.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Thornwood will take on Morgan Park at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. As for Argo, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Hillcrest at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Argonauts are facing the Hawks at the right time seeing as the Hawks are stuck on a seven-game losing streak.
