Basketball Recap: Tuscola Comes Up Short

Tuscola lost against Owen last Monday and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Monday. The Tuscola Mountaineers received a blow as they fell 67-49 to the Owen Warhorses. While losing is never fun, the Mountaineers can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 565th, while the Warhorses are ranked 242nd).

Despite the loss, Tuscola still got an impressive performance from Chris Wells, who went 5 for 12 on his way to 12 points and four steals. With that strong performance, Wells is now averaging an impressive 2.1 steals per game. Mason Harrell was another key player, putting up seven points.

Even though they lost, Tuscola was working as a unit and finished the game with 12 assists. That's the most assists they've managed all season.

It was another big night for Asante Martin, who went 11 of 18 on his way to 30 points and four blocks for Owen. Those four blocks gave Martin a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Jared Kelley, who went 6 of 10 on his way to 13 points and seven rebounds.

This is the second loss in a row for Tuscola and nudges their season record down to 2-8. As for Owen, the win (which was their fifth in a row) raised their record to 5-2.

Tuscola will face off against North Henderson at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. One thing working in North Henderson's favor is that they have posted at least 55 points in their last ten contests. As for Owen, they will take on Mountain Heritage at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday. Owen is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 67.7 points per game this season.
