Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Leyden). Their pitcher stepped up to hand the Proviso East Pirates a 15-0 shutout on Wednesday. With that victory, the Eagles brought their scoring average up to 6.4 runs per game.
Arianna Gallo made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out nine over four innings pitched. Those nine strikeouts gave her a new career-high. She was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in two of her three plate appearances with one stolen base and one run.
In other batting news, Leyden got a massive performance out of Elise Bertsche, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with three runs, four RBI, and two doubles. Those four RBI gave Bertsche a new career-high. Brianna Martinez was another key player, going a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs, one triple, and two RBI.
Leyden was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .600. They are 4-1 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.
Leyden now has a winning record of 9-8. As for Proviso East, their defeat was their fourth straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 1-10.
