The South Brunswick Cougars are taking a road trip to take on the Fairmont Golden Tornadoes at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
South Brunswick is probably headed into the contest with a chip on their shoulder considering Ashley just ended the team's nine-match winning streak on Monday. They came up short against the Screaming Eagle, falling 3-0. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest loss the Cougars have suffered since September 10th.
South Brunswick was was forced to take the loss, but they sure made Ashley work for it, especially in the first set. Once all was said and done, the final score wound up at 26-24, 25-7, 25-15.
Fairmont won the last time they faced Whiteville and Layla Hunt did her part to make sure it happened again. The Golden Tornadoes blew past the Wolfpack 3-0 on Thursday thanks in part to Hunt, who had 16 assists and four aces. She is on a roll when it comes to aces, as she's now served three or more in each of the last four games she's played.
While Fairmont won a shutout, things came down to the wire in the third set they played. The final score came out to 25-13, 25-17, 25-23.
South Brunswick better focus on containing Jerrian Taylor and Kimiyah Smith as the pair were huge in Fairmont's win. Taylor had ten digs and two aces, while Smith had seven kills, five blocks, and four digs. That's the most aces Taylor has posted over her last three matches.
Fairmont was lethal from the service line and finished the match with 14 aces. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now served at least eight aces in four consecutive matchups.
South Brunswick's defeat dropped their record down to 13-5. As for Fairmont, they moved to 5-14 with that win, which also ended their four-match losing streak.
Everything went South Brunswick's way against Fairmont in their previous matchup back in September, as South Brunswick made off with a 3-0 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Cougars since the squad won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
