The Sandia Prep Sundevils will face off against the Estancia Bears at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday. Sandia Prep has given up an average of 13.2 runs per game this season, but Thursday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.
Sandia Prep came up short against Ruidoso on Saturday, falling 21-4. The Sundevils have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Mary Otero made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and scored two runs and stole a base while going 1-for-1. That stolen base marked the first that she snagged this season. Another player making a difference was Madeline Draszkiewicz, who scored two runs while going 1-for-2.
Meanwhile, Estancia entered their tilt with Santa Fe Indian on Tuesday with seven consecutive wins, and they'll enter their next game with eight. They were the clear victors by a 12-2 margin over the Braves. The Bears might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won nine matchups by seven runs or more this season.
Peyton Looper and Ana Cuevas did most of the damage at the plate: Looper went a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and one double, while Cuevas scored two runs and stole two bases while going 2-for-3. That's the most hits Looper has posted since back in March. Karina Villafuerte was another key player, going 2-for-3 with three RBI.
Estancia was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .630. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Santa Fe Indian only posted a batting average of .294.
Estancia's win was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 12-2. As for Sandia Prep, their loss dropped their record down to 3-13.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Thursday as neither team is afraid to steal. Sandia Prep has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.3 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Estancia struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 3.8 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Sandia Prep might still be hurting after the 16-0 defeat they got from Estancia in their previous matchup back in April of 2024. Can the Sundevils avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
