Wharton and Durant are an even 3-3 against one another since February of 2016, but likely not for long. A feisty cat fight will be fought as Wharton Wildcats challenge Durant Cougars at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Wharton is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.4 runs per game this season.
Wharton will bounce into Thursday's contest after beating Strawberry Crest, who they had gone 2-7 against in their nine prior meetings. Wharton came out on top against Strawberry Crest by a score of 5-1 on Monday.
Eliza Connell made a big impact no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out eight batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned run off six hits (and not a single walk). She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than two walks in nine consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with one triple, one run, and one RBI.
In other batting news, Gabriella Greco was excellent, scoring two runs while going 2-for-3. Adriana Cadicamo was another key player, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 2-for-3.
Meanwhile, Durant had to endure a three-game losing streak, but that streak is no more. They walked away with a 7-4 win over Plant City on Saturday.
The team relied heavily on Lennox Ullrich, who scored three runs and stole two bases while going 2-for-3. That's the most stolen bases she has posted since back in March of 2024. Brooke Purcell also deserves some recognition as she got her first hit of the season.
Wharton's victory was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 7-7. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.7 runs on average over those games. As for Durant, their record now sits at 4-5.
Both Wharton and Durant just can't seem to miss. Wharton has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 10.1 hits per game. However, it's not like Durant struggles in that department as they've been averaging only 5.2 hits. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Wharton might still be hurting after the 17-0 loss they got from Durant in their previous matchup back in April of 2024. Can Wharton avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
