While the Las Animas Trojans couldn't quite beat the Holly Wildcats on Thursday, the three-point margin was a huge improvement compared to the 21-point defeat they were dealt last Tuesday. Las Animas fell just short of Holly by a score of 68-65. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest loss Las Animas has suffered yet this season.
Las Animas lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Tj Ortiz, who scored 23 points. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Ortiz has scored all season. Brander Nichols was another key contributor, scoring 17 points.
Holly's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Andre Salgado, who scored 27 points along with six steals. Another player making a difference was Devin Eaton, who scored 26 points.
Las Animas has been struggling recently, as they've lost five of their last six contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 4-5 record this season. As for Holly, they pushed their record up to 8-2 with that victory, which was their ninth straight at home.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Las Animas will take on Calhan at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday. The pair have had a bumpy ride up to this point with four consecutive losses for Calhan and three for Las Animas. As for Holly, they will stay at home for another game and welcome Crowley County at 2:00 p.m. on January 20th. Crowley County is currently enjoying a perfect season and no doubt want to keep things rolling.
