This week's postseason action didn't throw the rankings into complete disarray, but it did reorder the standings a decent amount. Among the action were the efforts of Hattiesburg's junior Jarod Conner, an offensive menace who scored five total TDs.
Can't Touch This
East Central's 52 - 6 win over West Lauderdale last week had a lot to do with the leadership of senior Tony Brown. Brown rushed for 286 yards and three touchdowns. In fact, our algorithms singled out Brown as one of the top players in the power rankings for the week.
Can't Stop Won't Stop
It isn't too difficult to come out on top when you enjoy a 164-yard edge over your opponent, and Pearl had just that last week. Everything went its way against St. Martin as it secured a 55 - 14 win. Two standouts for Pearl were senior Jake Smithhart and senior Johnny Winston; the former tossed the ball for 265 yards and two TDs while the latter ran for 35 yards and also punched in three touchdowns. With 13 consecutive wins, Pearl boasts the longest winning streak of any team in the rankings.
Look Out Below
Last week Brandon gave up the ball three times, mistakes that cost it the game. It was close but not close enough as it fell 30 - 27 to Hancock. The defeat came about despite a quality game from senior Javarius Spann, who earned three touchdowns and 207 yards rushing the ball. The bitter result was made even more difficult to swallow as it knocked the team down seven power ranking positions, the most of any team in the power rankings.
No Stoppin 'Em
Picayune and Laurel went up, up, and away last week as they combined for the highest point total (77) among all power ranked teams. Laurel got a somewhat close 42 - 35 victory over Picayune. The win boosted Laurel a satisfying seven spots in the power rankings.
