Independence and Highland are an even 5-5 against one another since May of 2021, but likely not for long. The Falcons will square off against the Scots at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
On Friday, Independence made easy work of Ridgeview and carried off a 19-4 victory. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Falcons.
The team relied heavily on Maylea Lutu, who went 3-for-4 with one home run, three runs, and four RBI. That's the most runs she has posted since back in March. Another player making a difference was Michaela Ames, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with four RBI, one run, and one double.
They weren't the only ones making solid contact: Independence kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits in four consecutive contests.
Meanwhile, Highland got the win against Bakersfield Christian on Friday by a conclusive 21-6. The Scots have beaten the Eagles the last three times they've met, but they better watch out: this was the closest the Eagles has come to flipping the script.
Janaye Phillips was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She tossed five innings while giving up three earned (and three unearned) runs off three hits. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with three RBI, one run, and one double.
In other batting news, Jocelyn Dotson was incredible, going 2-for-4 with one home run, five RBI, and two runs. That home run marked the first that she has launched this season. Madalyn Gonzalez was another key player, getting on base in all four of her plate appearances with three runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.
Independence's record is now 9-12-1. As for Highland, their record now sits at 15-6-1.
Wednesday's matchup will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Independence hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .339. However, it's not like Highland struggles in that department as they've averaged .378. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Independence came out on top in a nail-biter against Highland in their previous meeting back in April of 2025, sneaking past 5-4. Will the Falcons repeat their success, or do the Scots have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
