Baseball Game Preview: Cape Hatteras Hurricanes vs. Gates County Red Barons

Cape Hatteras is 0-6 against Gates County since May of 2015 but things could change on Thursday. The Cape Hatteras Hurricanes will be playing at home against the Gates County Red Barons at 5:00 p.m. Cape Hatteras is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7 runs per game this season.

Gates County will be up against a hot Cape Hatteras team: the squad just extended their winning streak to three. Cape Hatteras was the clear victors by a 15-2 margin over Albemarle School on Wednesday. The game marked the Hurricanes' most dominant victory of the season so far.

McCoy James and Wyatt Cannon did most of the damage at the plate: James scored four runs and stole Three bases. while getting on base in all four of his plate appearances, while Cannon went 2-for-4 with five RBI, two runs, and one triple. Cape Hatteras is undefeated when Cannon posts two or more runs, but 0-3 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Graham Stutts, who scored a run and stole Two bases. while going 1-for-1.

Cape Hatteras always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .629. The last time their OBP was this high was back in April of 2024.

Meanwhile, after soaring to ten runs the game before, Gates County was a bit more limited in their contest on Tuesday. They lost 13-2 to Bear Grass Charter. The defeat continues a trend for the Red Barons in their meetings with the Bears: they've now lost three in a row.

Gates County's loss dropped their record down to 1-4. As for Cape Hatteras, the win got them back to even at 3-3.

The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Thursday as neither team is afraid to steal. Cape Hatteras has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 8.2 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Gates County struggles in that department as they've been averaging 4 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
