Highlands is 1-7 against Rio Vista since October of 2014 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Friday. The Highlands Scots will head out on the road to face off against the Rio Vista Rams at 7:00 p.m. One thing working in Highlands' favor is that they have now posted big point totals in their last five matches.
Last Friday, Highlands didn't have too much trouble with Golden Sierra at home as they won 32-14.
Walter Lewis was his usual excellent self, rushing for 105 yards and two touchdowns on only 11 carries, while also throwing for 116 yards and a touchdown. Ahmere Choyce was in the mix too, providing Highlands with two touchdowns.
Meanwhile, Rio Vista got themselves on the board against Vacaville Christian on Friday, but Vacaville Christian never followed suit. They beat the Falcons by the very same score they won with last week: 42-0. The score at the end of the third wound up being the final score as Rio Vista just coasted through the last quarter.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Rio Vista to victory, but perhaps none more so than Matthew Bodle, who rushed for 104 yards and a touchdown. Another player making a difference was Daniel Diaz, who rushed for 75 yards and two touchdowns.
Their wins bumped Highlands to 4-4 and Rio Vista to 5-2.
Here's a few offensive stats to keep an eye on ahead of Friday's match: Highlands has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 193.9 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Rio Vista struggles in that department as they've been even better at 293 per game. It's looking like Friday's matchup might have some serious battles in the trenches.
Highlands took a serious blow against Rio Vista in their previous meeting back in October of 2022, falling 50-0. Thankfully for Highlands, Tony Bellante (who rushed for 31 yards and three touchdowns, and also picked up 83 receiving yards) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result? There's only one way to find out.
