This season hasn't been kind to the Coral Gables Cavaliers, who are still winless after their 13th game. They were outmatched by Ferguson at home and fell 47-15. While losing is never fun, Coral Gables can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 499th, while Ferguson is ranked 166th).
Despite the loss, Coral Gables saw an underclassman step up: Aniyah Coffie scored 12 points. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Coffie has scored all season.
Ferguson's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Sophia Diaz, who scored 13 points along with seven steals. Cecilia Rodriguez was another key contributor, scoring 11 points along with nine rebounds and five steals.
Coral Gables dropped their record down to 0-13 with that loss, which was their ninth straight at home. That rough patch could be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they only averaged 24.9 points per game. As for Ferguson, the victory (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 9-4.
Coral Gables will be playing at home against LaSalle at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. Averaging 48.3 so far this season, LaSalle's high-powered offense has been in full-swing lately, so Coral Gables better be ready for a challenge. As for Ferguson, they will head out on the road to take on Homestead at 7:30 p.m. on Monday. Homestead is also coming in off of a big victory, so somebody is in for a big reversal of fortune.
