Carroll and Ray are an even 5-5 against one another since October of 2015, but not for long. The Tigers will be playing in front of their home fans against the Texans at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Carroll has given up an average of 28.8 points per game this season, but Friday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.
Carroll's offense might be in the hot seat on Friday considering what happened against Gregory-Portland on Friday. They had to suffer through a 60-0 loss at the hands of the Wildcats. While losing is never fun, the Tigers can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas football rankings (they are ranked 645th, while the Wildcats are ranked 217th).
Meanwhile, a well-balanced attack led Ray over Corpus Christi Moody in every quarter on their way to victory on Friday. Given that consistent dominance, it should come as no surprise that the Texans blew the Trojans out of the water with a 55-21 final score. The result was nothing new for the Texans, who have now won three games by 34 points or more so far this season.
Ray's win came from a few key players Carroll will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Tripp Thompson, who threw for 193 yards and four touchdowns on only 11 passes, and also rushed for 72 yards and one score. His passing game has become a key predictor of Ray's success: the team is 4-1 when his passer rating is 110 or higher, but only 1-2 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Brian McCullum, who gained 120 total yards and three touchdowns.
Ray didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. Jason Gutierrez picked up that interception and then proceeded to rub salt in the wound by taking it back the other way for a touchdown. He has been hot recently, having also posted eight or more total tackles the last three times he's played. Jaycen Elmore was another major factor on D, making 13 total tackles (1.0 for loss).
Ray is on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 5-3 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 38.7 points over those games. As for Carroll, their defeat ended a three-game streak of away wins and brought them to 4-4.
Carroll took their win against Ray in their previous meeting back in November of 2024 by a conclusive 31-10 score. One of the biggest obstacles the team faced in that game was Thompson, who threw for 218 yards and one TD, and also rushed for 48 yards. Now that he's got a second chance to win this matchup, will the Tigers still be able to contain Thompson? There's only one way to find out.
