After a string of seven wins, the Port Gibson Blue Waves's good fortune finally ran out on Friday. They fell just short of South Pike by a score of 37-35. Port Gibson was given a dose of their own medicine in this game as South Pike apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in January.
Several Blue Waves players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Amyah Hedrick, who scored 15 points. Rekiyah Washington was another key contributor, scoring seven points along with 11 rebounds and two blocks.
Leading South Pike to victory were Makayla Robertson and Alaysha Williams. Robertson scored nine points along with five steals, while Williams dropped a double-double on ten points and ten rebounds. Robertson hasn't dropped below three steals for four straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of Shalia Johnson, who scored five points along with two steals.
Port Gibson's defeat ended a four-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 15-7. As for South Pike, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won eight of their last nine matches, which provided a nice bump to their 18-6 record this season.
Port Gibson will be playing in front of their home fans against Franklin County at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. Hopefully Port Gibson is not getting complacent, as they presents a significant challenge as they come into the match much higher ranked than Franklin County in Mississippi (Port Gibson is ranked 118th, while Franklin County is ranked 248th). South Pike does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
