Video: National Games of the Week Two South Florida powers face off in Fort Lauderdale.
For 18 minutes, the up-and-comer had the perennial power on the ropes.
But
Central (Miami, Fla.), the 13th-ranked team in the country, scored 48 of the next 55 points to score a convincing 48-21 triumph over host and 19th-ranked
Cardinal Gibbons (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.).
According to the
Sun-Sentinel,
Maurice Underwood threw three touchdowns and ran for another as the Rockets took control and never let up.
Underwood scored on a 2-yard keeper midway through the second quarter to cut the home team's lead in half, 14-7. A penalty wiped out a Cardinal Gibbons touchdown and Underwood immediately took advantage, hooking up with
Anthony Frederick on a 60-yard touchdown, tying the score at 14 at halftime.
A 52-yard bomb from Underwood to
Anthony Colonel to start the third gave the Rockets for good, 21-14, and then after a turnover, he found
Jaylin Young with a 30-yard touchdown, making it 28-14.
A 1-yard touchdown run by
Lexington Joseph gave the visitor's complete control heading into the fourth.
Kentucky-bound quarterback
Nik Scalzo gave Cardinal Gibbons a 14-0 led with a touchdown pass and run. But the home team didn't score again until four minutes left on a 14-yard touchdown run by
Tajae Davis.
The Rockets were well on their way.
