Waverly and Pius X are an even 5-5 against one another since April of 2017, but likely not for long. The Vikings will head out on the road to take on the Thunderbolts at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The last nine games Waverly has played have been within two runs, so don't be surprised if it's a close one.
Saturday just wasn't the day for Waverly's offense. They fell just short of Grand Island by a score of 2-0 on Saturday. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest defeat the Vikings have suffered since March 29th.
Codey Nienhueser was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he pitched 5.2 innings while giving up just two earned runs off three hits. That's the fewest earned runs he has allowed over his last three matches.
Pius X came out on top against Hastings on Monday thanks in part to the team's impressive six-run fourth inning. The Thunderbolts took their contest against the Tigers 12-8. The high-flying hitting performance was a huge turnaround for the Thunderbolts considering their two-run performance the game before.
Hayden Huggins looked comfortable as he tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit.
At the plate, Jake Bugbee was excellent, getting on base in three of his five plate appearances with two stolen bases, one run, and one RBI. Derek Burrage also deserves some recognition as he snagged his first stolen base of the season.
Pius X always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .524. The last time their OBP was this high was back in March.
Waverly's loss ended a four-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 17-7. As for Pius X, their record now sits at 8-11.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Tuesday as neither team is afraid to steal. Waverly has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Pius X struggles in that department as they've been averaging 2.8 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Waverly came out on top in a nail-biter against Pius X in their previous matchup back in March, sneaking past 3-1. Do the Vikings have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Thunderbolts turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
