Omaha Northwest is 0-6 against Elkhorn South since February of 2015 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Friday. Omaha Northwest struggled with assists on Saturday (Kearney had 14 more) and sadly the final score reflected it. Omaha Northwest was dealt a 84-41 defeat at the hands of Kearney. Omaha Northwest was in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 48-24.
The loss doesn't tell the whole story though, as several players had good games. One of the most active was Dontae McDowell, who scored eight points. The team also got some help courtesy of Shawn Barnes, who scored eight points.
Meanwhile, Elkhorn South's 17-7 record from last season is now well into the rear view mirror after another tough outing. They fell 61-49 to Papillion-LaVista South on Saturday. While losing is never fun, Elkhorn South can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Nebraska basketball rankings (they are ranked 185th, while Papillion-LaVista South is ranked 20th).
Like Omaha Northwest, Elkhorn South lost despite seeing results from several players. Aidan Skradis led the charge by scoring 18 points. The contest was Skradis' sixth in a row with at least ten points. Lincoln Schwarz was another key contributor, scoring ten points along with five rebounds.
Elkhorn South struggled to get the ball back on offense and finished the game with only two offensive rebounds. That's the fewest offensive rebounds they've managed all season.
Omaha Northwest's loss was their fourth straight on the road dating back to last season, which bumped their record down to 0-5. As for Elkhorn South, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 2-4.
This contest is one where the number of possessions is likely to be a big factor: Omaha Northwest have been smashing the glass this season, having only averaged 21.4 rebounds per game. It's a different story for Elkhorn South, though, as they've been averaging only 26.3 rebounds per game. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
Omaha Northwest suffered a grim 83-63 defeat to Elkhorn South in their previous matchup back in January. Can Omaha Northwest avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
