The St. John's Islanders will challenge the Woodland Wolverines at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. St. John's is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.3 runs per game this season.
St. John's is probably headed into the match with a chip on their shoulder considering Porter-Gaud just ended the team's five-game winning streak on Wednesday. They came up short against the Cyclones, falling 14-2. Having soared to a lofty ten runs in the game before, the Islanders couldn't push the score so high this time.
St. John's saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Robert Grant, who went 1-for-2 with two RBI.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Woodland). They skirted past Timberland 12-11. The win continues a trend for the Wolverines in their matchups with the Wolves: they've now won seven in a row.
Mac Milligan made a big impact no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing three innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. What's more, he posted four strikeouts, the most he's had since back in March. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBI.
In other batting news, Luke Crosby was incredible, going 3-for-5 with two runs, one triple, and two RBI. Those two runs gave him a new career-high. Garrett Matthews was another key player, going 2-for-5 with two runs, one triple, and one RBI.
Woodland kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. That's the most hits they've managed all season.
St. John's defeat dropped their record down to 8-5. As for Woodland, their victory bumped their record up to 3-12.
Woodland's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: St. John's has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .438. It's a different story for Woodland, though, as they've only averaged .359. Will they be able to contain St. John's hitters?
St. John's took their win against Woodland when the teams last played two weeks ago by a conclusive 13-0 score. Do the Islanders have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Wolverines turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
