The Resurrection Christian Cougars will head out to square off against the Colorado Academy Mustangs at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. Colorado Academy took a loss in their last matchup and will be looking to turn the tables on Resurrection Christian, who comes in off a win.
Resurrection Christian came out on top against Berthoud on Friday thanks in part to the team's impressive six-run third inning. The Cougars put the hurt on the Spartans with a sharp 9-1 victory. Considering the Cougars have won six contests by more than five runs this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.
Maddox Sessions was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one walk in three consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run.
In other pitching news, Resurrection Christian got a great performance from Graham Riggs as he tossed five innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits. Riggs has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in three consecutive appearances.
Back at the plate, Colton Barber was excellent, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances with two runs. That's the most runs he has posted since back in March. Another player making a difference was Brayden MacAlmon, who got on base in four of his five plate appearances with two stolen bases, one run, and one double.
Meanwhile, Colorado Academy faced Forge Christian in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Thursday. The Mustangs fell just short of the Fury by a score of 5-3. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest defeat the Mustangs have suffered against the Fury since May 3, 2022.
Jordan Reiter and Kieran Delaney did some serious damage despite the final result: Reiter went 1-for-2 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double, while Delaney went 1-for-3 with one home run and two RBI.
Resurrection Christian is on a roll lately: they've won ten of their last 11 games. That's provided a nice bump to their 13-5 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.6 runs on average over those games. As for Colorado Academy, their loss ended an 11-game streak of wins at home dating back to last season and dropped them to 14-3.
Both Resurrection Christian and Colorado Academy just can't seem to miss. The Cougars have been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 9.6 hits per game. However, it's not like Colorado Academy struggles in that department as they've been averaging only 5.1 hits. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Resurrection Christian was able to grind out a solid victory over Colorado Academy in their previous matchup back in May of 2022, winning 6-3. Do the Cougars have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Mustangs turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
