Southern Door came tearing into Friday's matchup with six straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 4.5 runs), and they left with even more momentum. They never let the Sturgeon Bay Clippers get on the board and left with a 16-0 victory. The Eagles' hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.
Ashlyn Delfosse and Samantha Melville made a splash while hitting and pitching. Throwing, Delfosse tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Meanwhile, Melville tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Delfosse has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances. At the plate, Delfosse went a perfect 4-for-4 with one home run, three runs, and four RBI, while Melville went a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs, two doubles, and one stolen base. Delfosse also hit a triple, marking her first of the season.
In other batting news, Madyson Counard and Alanah Kaye did most of the damage at the plate: Counard went 2-for-3 with three runs, four RBI, and one double, while Kaye went 1-for-2 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI. That home run was Kaye's first of the season. Audrey Plzack was another key player, going 1-for-3 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run.
Southern Door always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .607. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
Southern Door's win was their sixth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 7-3. The home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.3 runs over those games. As for Sturgeon Bay, they are on a nine-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-4.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Southern Door will square off against Brillion at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Eagles 3.8, the Lions 2.7) so any runs scored will be well earned. As for Sturgeon Bay, they will welcome Gibraltar at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
