II Section III recap Sept. 26, 2012
The biggest upset of the week belonged to Sunnyslope, who took down 96th ranked Goldwater, 14-7.
Chaparral suffered a letdown when it was bounced from the state Top 25 this week after a 49-12 loss to Chaparral. The Firebirds had been ranked 16th, but fell to 27 following the defeat.
Cactus Shadows's dynamic duo of Bryce Kinsler and Kyle Gladstone proved tough for Prescott to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Kinsler threw for 639 yards and six touchdowns and Gladstone had 271 yards receiving. Matt Hartlen helped Cactus Shadows' passing attack out by catching 15 balls for 222 yards.
Kaine Bayze made the biggest impact on defense this week as the Badgers bested the Falcons. The 5-foot-10 junior grabbed one interception and racked up two sacks.
Brady Mengarelli was the most productive running back in II Section III this week. He ran for 419 yards on 30 carries as Prescott lost to Prescott. Teammate Chris Wright added to the ground attack by rushing for 36 yards.
Greg Davis's team's Kinsler and Gladstone have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Kinsler has thrown for 1513 yards this season, while Gladstone has 29 catches for 512 yards. Mengarelli from Cody Collett's team leads the league in rushing with 1410 yards.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when Horizon takes on the Vikings. The Huskies are in third place, while Sunnyslope is in eighth place.
Kingman moved up to 98 from 138 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in II Section III. The Bulldogs were able to make the jump by beating Mohave 20-14.
