Southwestern recap Oct. 16, 2012
Vista Murrieta extended the longest winning streak in Southwestern this week by beating Great Oak, 65-14. The victory was the seventh in a row for the team.
Chaparral was able to crack the Top 25 in the state rankings this week after topping Temecula Valley. The Pumas came in at 23 in the state poll after placing at number 32 last week.
The Wolfpack's dynamic duo of Carson Luna and Brandon Presley proved tough for Vista Murrieta to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Luna threw for 133 yards and two touchdowns and Presley had 102 yards receiving. Kyle Ruhe helped Great Oak's passing attack out by catching three balls for 31 yards.
Skyler Seibold was the most productive running back in the league this week. In seven carries, he ran for 117 yards as Chaparral lost to Coley Candaele's team. Justin Harris also contributed to the rushing game with 68 yards on the ground.
Murrieta Mesa's Chase Chambers and Khalil Sharpe have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Chambers has thrown for 2037 yards this season, while Sharpe, a 6-foot-2 receiver, has 58 catches for 660 yards. Ryan Tukua's team's Harris leads the league in rushing yards with 958.
The top two teams in Southwestern will face off this week when first place Vista Murrieta takes on second place Murrieta Valley. Last week, the Broncos topped Robbie Robinson's team, while Murrieta Valley beat the Rams.
The Pumas' Harris is a mere 42 yards away from breaking the 1,000-rushing-yards mark for the season.
The top two defenses in the league will face off this season when the Nighthawks take on Vista Murrieta. Murrieta Valley has allowed 60 points this season, while the Broncos have given up 92. Greg Ireland's team allowed 30 points last week as it bested Murrieta Mesa.
Vista Murrieta took down Great Oak 65-14 last week, the largest margin of any game.
