Fort Plain and Fonda-Fultonville are an even 3-3 against one another since May of 2018, but likely not for long. The Hilltoppers will venture away from home to challenge the Valley Hawks at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the two teams posted some lofty run totals in their previous games.
Fort Plain had to skate by with only a two-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the 17-run drubbing they dealt Mekeel Christian Academy on Friday. The Hilltoppers put the hurt on the Lions with a sharp 18-1 win. The Hilltoppers not only won on Friday, but they posted their biggest win since April 27, 2024 (when they won 20-3).
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Fonda-Fultonville). They blew past Granville 16-5 on Saturday. With that victory, the Valley Hawks brought their scoring average up to 6.1 runs per game.
Jake Hernigle made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing four innings while giving up just one earned (and three unearned) runs off five hits. Hernigle was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with two runs and one stolen base. He has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last three times he's played.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Colin Pickering, who got on base in all four of his plate appearances with three stolen bases, three runs, and one double. He also put up a hit, which was his first of the season. Sam Huckans was another key player, getting on base in four of his five plate appearances with three RBI, one run, and one double.
Fonda-Fultonville always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .579. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
Fonda-Fultonville's record is now 5-2. As for Fort Plain, their win was their first in the league, bumping their league record up to 1-3 and their overall record up to 2-3.
Fort Plain might still be hurting after the 16-1 loss they got from Fonda-Fultonville in their previous meeting back in April of 2024. Can the Hilltoppers avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
