Couldn't have asked for a better start to 2024 than the 80-45 blowout they got at home against Aransas Pass. Given Gregory-Portland's advantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 180th, while Aransas Pass is ranked 969th), the result on Tuesday wasn't entirely unexpected.
Shawn Williams was his usual excellent self, scoring 31 points along with eight rebounds. The match was his 21st in a row with at least ten points. Trevor Jones was another key contributor, scoring 15 points along with seven rebounds.
Gregory-Portland's win was their sixth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 20-4. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 84.5 points per game. As for Aransas Pass, they have been struggling recently, as they've lost four of their last five contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 8-15 record this season.
Gregory-Portland will head out on the road to face off against Miller at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. As for Aransas Pass, they will be playing at home against McMullen County at 1:15 p.m. on Friday. McMullen County will be looking to extend their current five-game winning streak.
