The Chiles Timberwolves will venture away from home to face off against the Taylor County Bulldogs at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Chiles is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 14.9 runs per game this season.
While Chiles didn't have the best season last year (they finished 10-14), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. They were the clear victor by an 11-1 margin over Lincoln on Wednesday. The high-flying hitting performance was a huge turnaround for the Timberwolves considering their two-run performance the match before.
Anna Kate Barber was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she struck out seven batters over five innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits (and only one walk). She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances.
In other batting news, Mia Hemenway was a standout: she went a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run, four RBI, and one double. Adelyn Matthews was another key player, going 2-for-4 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI.
Chiles was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .400. They are a perfect 7-0 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.
Meanwhile, Taylor County was not able to break out of their rough patch on Thursday as the team picked up their third straight defeat. They took an 11-7 hit to the loss column at the hands of Lincoln.
Ryver Arnold made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 2-for-5 with three RBI and one double. Irene Meler also deserves some recognition as she hit her first double of the season.
Taylor County's loss dropped their record down to 1-8. As for Chiles, their record is now 8-2.
Taylor County's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Chiles has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 13.9 hits per game. It's a different story for Taylor County, though, as they've been averaging 12 hits. Given Chiles' sizable advantage in that area, Taylor County will need to find a way to close that gap.
Chiles took their victory against Taylor County in their previous meeting back in April of 2024 by a conclusive 11-1. The rematch might be a little tougher for Chiles since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
