FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Led by a strong performance by quarterback Mike German, Blanche Ely rolled to a 34-21 win over rival Dillard on Saturday in Broward County’s annual Soul Bowl.
German, a senior, completed 12-of-27 passes for 139 yards and three touchdowns, while helping the Tigers (9-0) jump to a 28-6 halftime lead. All of German’s touchdown passes were to receiver Avery Johnson, who aided the win with six catches for 110 yards. Nursing a 28-21 lead with 6:24 left in the fourth quarter, defensive back Cyrus Johnson returned an interception 19 yards for a score to seal the win for Ely.

After leading Central to a 52-6 win over Hialeah-Miami Lakes by competing 17-of-25 passes for 220 yards and three touchdowns, senior quarterback Jeffrey Godfrey is just 224 yards away from passing former Northwestern standout Jacory Harris as Miami-Dade County’s all-time leading passer. Godfrey has accumulated 6,361 yards in his career and could pass Harris next week when the Rockets face Booker T. Washington.
Rising star
Sony Michel helped American Heritage (Plantation, Fla.) clinch the District 8-2A title with a 36-27 win over Cardinal Gibbons by rushing for 203 yards on 33 carries and two scores. Michel, only an eighth-grader, has compiled 1,275 yards on 155 carries with 14 touchdowns (8.23 yards per carry) this season.
Sophomore continues dominance
Randy "Duke" Johnson led Norland to a 42-6 win over Mater by rushing for 176 yards on 11 carries and four touchdowns. Johnson, a sophomore, leads Miami-Dade County in rushing with 1,337 yards on 122 carries and 22 touchdowns.
T.I.P. Award
This week’s top individual performance award goes to Ransom Everglades’ Gideon Ajagbe. Ajagbe, a University of Florida verbal, led his team to a 17-14 win over Pope John Paul by rushing for 174 yards on 36 carries and two scores, while recording 10 tackles, two sacks, a forced fumble and two fumble recoveries from the safety position.
