The Wellington Eagles will venture away from home to take on the Roosevelt Roughriders at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. One thing working in Wellington's favor is that they have posted at least ten runs in their last five contests.
Roosevelt's hitters are going to have their work cut out for them on Thursday: Wellington hadn't allowed a single run the last three times they've hit the field. Everything went Wellington's way against Thompson Valley on Tuesday as they made off with a 10-0 win. The result was nothing new for Wellington, who have now won ten matchups by six runs or more so far this season.
Reganne Johnson was excellent, going a perfect 1-for-1 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI. Charley Somday was another key player, going 1-for-2 with two stolen bases and one run.
Wellington hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. The team has now struck out at least four batters in five consecutive games.
Meanwhile, Roosevelt fought the good fight in their extra-innings contest against Greeley West on Wednesday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Spartans by a score of 6-5.
Lily Wiese made the most of her time in the batter's box despite the final result and got on base in three of her four plate appearances with two runs and one double. Another player making a difference was Molly Vetter, who went 1-for-3 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
Wellington has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won 14 of their last 15 matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 18-3 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.7 runs on average over those games. As for Roosevelt, their defeat dropped their record down to 14-8.
Roosevelt's hitters will have their work cut out for them on Thursday. Wellington has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 8.1 strikeouts per game. It's a different story for Roosevelt, though, as they've been averaging only 3.8 strikeouts. Will Wellington keep running through batters, or will the Roughriders buck the trend?
Wellington took their win against Roosevelt when the teams last played back in September by a conclusive 16-10 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Eagles since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
