The Simla Cubs will head out on the road to challenge the Merino Rams at 3:30 p.m. on Monday. Simla is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.8 runs per game this season.
Simla easily dispatched Elbert on Thursday, but unfortunately both the margin and the ultimate result were a different story in this one. The Cubs fell just short of Peyton by a score of 6-4 on Saturday. The Cubs' defeat signaled the end of their four-game winning streak.
Simla saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Tatum Kocerha, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 1-for-4. Kocerha has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last three times he's played.
Meanwhile, Merino waltzed into their game on Saturday with two straight wins... but they left with three. They blew past the Bulldogs 12-2. Considering the Rams have won six matchups by more than nine runs this season, Saturday's blowout was nothing new.
Coen Schmidt made a splash no matter where he played. On the mound, he struck out ten batters over 5.2 innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off two hits (and only one walk). Those ten strikeouts gave him a new career-high. He was also big at the plate, scoring two runs while going 4-for-5.
In other batting news, Isaac Poe was incredible, scoring a run and stealing a base while getting on base in all five of his plate appearances. What's more, he posted three hits, the most he's had since back in March of 2024. Mickey Swiger was another key player, scoring three runs while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances.
Merino kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least nine hits in five consecutive contests.
Simla's loss dropped their record down to 5-3. As for Merino, their record now sits at 9-4.
Monday's game might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Simla has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .443. However, it's not like Merino struggles in that department as they've averaged .532. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Simla might still be hurting after the 17-7 defeat they got from Merino in their previous meeting back in May of 2022. Can the Cubs avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
