AA Region 8 recap September 24, 2013
Charlie Woerner of Rabun County ran for the longest rushing play in AA Region 8 this season against Commerce last week. Woerner scampered for 73 yards on the play and finished with 76 on the day as his team beat the Tigers.
Greene County was the team that made the biggest jump in the rankings, moving from eighth to sixth in the league. Earlier in the week, the Tigers defeated Hapeville Charter 35-13.
Rabun County's dynamic duo of Wes Holcombe and Alden Wright proved to be unstoppable against Commerce, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Holcombe threw for 261 yards and 2 touchdowns and Wright had 136 yards receiving. Jordan Oliver helped Rabun County's passing attack out by catching 5 balls for 67 yards.
Lee Shaw's team's dynamic duo of Holcombe and Wright proved tough for Michael Brown's team to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week.
Holcombe put up the best numbers through the air as the Wildcats topped the Tigers.
Joseph Garuba was the most successful running back in the league this week. In 19 carries, he ran for 102 yards as Riverside Military Academy beat Commerce.
Wright was the best wideout in AA Region 8 this week as the Wildcats bested the Tigers.
He went 22-29 with 0 interception.
Rabun County's Holcombe and Wright have formed a dream team this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Holcombe has thrown for 605 yards this season, while Wright has 18 catches for 269 yards. Garuba from the Eagles leads the league in rushing with 234 yards.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when Union County takes on Washington-Wilkes. The Panthers are currently in third, while the Tigers are in first.
Adding to the longest winning streak in the league this week, Washington-Wilkes beat Riverside Military Academy 50-14,. The victory was the fourth in a row for the team.
