Canterbury has enjoyed a two-game homestand but will soon have to dust off their road jerseys. They will face off against the Lakeside Christian Lions at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Canterbury will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Florida Rankings (they are ranked 683rd, while Lakeside Christian is ranked 242nd).
Canterbury suffered their biggest defeat since December 4, 2023 on Friday. Their rough 62-42 loss to Brandon Academy might stick with them for a while. Canterbury was in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 35-12.
Despite the defeat, Canterbury saw an underclassman step up: Kayden Calhoun scored 21 points along with eight rebounds and three steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Jaylen Thomas, who scored six points along with four steals.
Meanwhile, Lakeside Christian waltzed into their matchup on Tuesday with three straight wins but they left with four. They slipped by Northside Christian 73-72. Having run the score up that high, both teams probably have some extra defensive drills coming up.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Lakeside Christian to victory, but perhaps none more so than Nijaun Harris, who scored 27 points along with eight rebounds and three blocks. Jalen Jackson was another key contributor, scoring 17 points along with three steals.
Canterbury's loss dropped their record down to 2-11. As for Lakeside Christian, they pushed their record up to 13-5 with that victory, which was their fifth straight on the road.
This contest is one where the number of possessions is likely to be a big factor: Canterbury have been smashing the glass this season, having only averaged 21.3 rebounds per game. It's a different story for Lakeside Christian, though, as they've been averaging only 32.7 rebounds per game. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
Canterbury strolled past Lakeside Christian in their previous meeting back in January of 2023 by a score of 63-46. The rematch might be a little tougher for Canterbury since the squad won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
