Herndon is 1-8 against South Lakes since April of 2018 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Saturday. The Hornets will face off against the Seahawks at 2:30 p.m. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (Herndon 4, South Lakes 3.6) so any runs scored will be well earned.
Herndon will roll into the matchup after a wild two-game stretch: they only put up two runs on Friday, then bounced right back against Washington-Liberty on Tuesday. The Hornets came out on top against the Generals by a score of 12-7. Considering the Hornets' hitters had been struggling lately, the high-scoring outing was a much-needed turnaround.
Emilia Korsvall was incredible, going 4-for-5 with three runs, two doubles, and one triple. That triple marked the first that she hit this season. Another player making a difference was Anna Korsvall, who scored three runs while going 2-for-5.
Emilia wasn't the only one making solid contact: Herndon kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. That's the most hits they've managed all season.
Meanwhile, South Lakes waltzed into their game on Thursday with four straight wins... but they left with five. They were the clear victors by a 15-1 margin over the Chargers. Considering the Seahawks have won five contests by more than five runs this season, Thursday's blowout was nothing new.
Meagan Maguire was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs off one hit. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances. She was even better at the plate, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 2-for-3.
In other batting news, Fiona Shaw and Sydney Zeigler did most of the damage at the plate: Shaw scored four runs and stole three bases while going 3-for-5, while Zeigler scored a run and stole two bases while going 2-for-3. Those three stolen bases gave Shaw a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Kayla Rudolph, who scored two runs and stole two bases while going 1-for-3.
South Lakes pushed their record up to 6-1 with the victory, which was their fifth straight on the road dating back to last season. The road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.0 runs on average over those games. As for Herndon, they now have a winning record of 3-2.
Fans could be in store for some top-tier slugging on Saturday. Herndon hasn't had any problems when it comes to power this season, having averaged 0.6 home runs per game. However, it's not like South Lakes struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 0.7 home runs. With so much power on both teams, it'll be down to the pitchers to keep the mound locked down.
Herndon might still be hurting after the 6-0 loss they got from South Lakes in their previous meeting back in March of 2024. Can the Hornets avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
